Volunteer Information

Volunteers are a valuable resource and valued members of the AWARE team. AWARE was founded by people who believed in the power of volunteering to reach out to those hurting from domestic and sexual violence in order to provide healing and recovery. If you want to get involved, contact: Linda Schwalm at (517)783-1638 x. 33 or lschwalm@awareshelter.org.

LEVEL 1: Activity-specific opportunites which do no require AWARE Volunteer Training includes workshop presentations (i.e. art, education, personal development, etc), yard beautification, assistance with donations, fundraising publicity development, office work and much more.

LEVEL 1: Ongoing volunteer work includes working with children, direct client contact, sexual assault team response, community education and outreach and more Volunteers work in the area in which they are most effective, by their own choice. This level of volunteer work requires AWARE Volunteer Training, which is a 32-hour immersion in empowerment philosophy, domestic and sexual violence awareness and service-provider skills. Volunteers at this level also must consent to a criminal background check and a Department of Human Resources Central Registry Clearance. Consents and forms are available from the volunteer coordinator, Linda Schwalm.

AWARE serves a residential and non-residential population of survivors of domestic and sexual violence through an empowerment philosophy. Thus all volunteers must be trained to respond to the survivors using this value system.

If you have a volunteer idea for AWARE, please let us know! We welcome all.
